Day 45: Wed 9 Aug 23 - Mt Ossa To Proserpine

Wed 9 Aug 23 - Mt Ossa To Proserpine (Towed 84 km)

Weather: 15 Deg, partly cloudy and a beautiful morning. At Proserpine at reached 23 Deg, but felt much fresher with the gusting 35km/hr ESE wind.

With only a short distance to drive to today, and unable to check into the caravan park before midday, we took our time packing and getting ready to leave. After a cup of tea with Geoff and Sharon, we eventually said goodbye, and set off at about 10am, arriving in Proserpine shortly after 11am. We stopped in town for a wander around, then made our way to the caravan park and checked in. Noel overheard the caretaker mention 30 vans checked out today, and 30 more were checking in. Everyone we speak to heading south is complaining about the lack of availability of caravan sites all along the  QLD coast. Certainly on our short drive today there were gazillions (not sure it's even a number, but there were lots) of vans and motorhomes on the move. We've chosen Proserpine as a base to explore the surrounding area, and until tonight, we were unsure if we would continue north, or start making our way back home. After some discussion, we've decided that we will start heading back home, steering inland from Mackay and making our way down the inland route. The Proserpine Tourist Park is owned and operated by the local council, and our site is quite generous in size - not price at $42/night. It is very neat and clean, but there must be a lot of long term residents, because it was like a large kids playground after school hours with lots of noisy kids running around on bikes and scooters outside. Thankfully no one was run over, and it all quietened down by 6pm. There is also a council owned heated swimming pool next door to the caravan park which we can access for free, so I may have to dip the toes in tomorrow. After setting up, we had lunch and as I've been feeling a bit off today, I had a short nap. We then drove into town for another stroll around, visited the information centre and bought a few groceries before returning to the van. While Noel prepared dinner, I went for stroll through the golf course and around a few blocks, before returning for dinner and another quiet evening. Tomorrow, we plan to drive into Airlie Beach for the day.

Farewell Geoff and Sharon - till next time.

Set up at Proserpine for a few days.
