Sun 23 Jul 23 - Yeppoon
Weather: A bit fresh at 12 Deg this morning with the slight breeze switching around through the day from Westerly to Easterly, and clear most of the day. The temperature peaked at a modest 20 Deg by midday, becoming overcast and fresh in the late afternoon.
We had another slow start to the day, but after a caffeine fix, I headed off for a very enjoyable 9km walk along the beach to Farnborough Creek and back in the warm sunshine, at times breaking into a jog. Back to the van for breakfast and a few chores, then I went up to visit Uncle for an 1.5hrs - just in time for morning tea. Uncle is still very alert and keeps abreast of current domestic and world affairs. Today our conversation included the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and he was telling me about his time in the German Army, as POW in Czechoslovakia, and interestingly, his encounters with the White Russian Army (predominately German, Ukraine and Belarus mercenaries) who were also fighting the Red Army Russians during WW2. Unfortunately, like everyone else, he has no pearls of wisdom about how long this current conflict may last. I left him at 1145 to have his lunch, returning to the van for my lunch. Meanwhile Noel had been busy in the kitchen cooking - baking blueberry muffins and an Italian baked Risoni and Meatballs for dinner. After lunch, I drove 14km towards Rockhampton to climb up Mt Jim Crow - now named Mt Baga. Mt Baga is a 223m high volcanic plug of trachyte, an internal remnant of a long extinct volcano formed over 70 million years ago. Sitting alone on a flat plain along the main road between Yeppoon and Rockhampton, it's a little under 1km to the top via a very steep track with a fair bit of rock scrambling, but the views are definitely worth the effort. It took me just over an hour for the return walk including stopping for photos. Back at the van, Noel went off for her walk to the beach and back, while I showered and had a quiet afternoon. Tomorrow morning, we will drive to Rockhampton to have the Ranger serviced.
